About BREAKTHROUGH!

Our Mission

At BreakThrough! we know that 80% of behavioral health weight loss programs fail to produce long-term positive results because healthcare is often practiced in silos.

We believe healthcare providers deserve an integrative, progressive approach. Our evidenced-based program encourages patients to become stakeholders in their recovery from the underlying mental health conditions that contribute to metabolic disorders.

Patients gain knowledge, insight, and skills that improve awareness and self-esteem so they can enjoy sustainable recovery.

Our Core Values

At BreakThrough! we respect individuality to promote inclusivity. We are passionate about transparency and accountability to deliver an exceptional experience to healthcare providers. We are:

Heather Hamilton
PhD.

Founder of BreakThrough!

Dr. Heather Hamilton is a former airline executive, pilot, and director of airline training, fleet acquisition, and human factor safety programs. After a debilitating injury in 2007, she transitioned from aviation and regulatory compliance, to psychological research and mental health counseling. Heather holds a Bachelor’s degree in Aeronautical Science, 2 Masters of Science degrees in Psychology and Mental Health Counseling, as well as a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. Throughout these degree programs she focused on dual diagnosis and health factors, the development of sensitive mental health resources for marginalized populations, as well as conducting research on brain health, and neuropsychological recovery from substance use and eating disorders.

Heather began her career in mental health counseling with the prestigious Talbott Recovery Center in Atlanta where she specialized in the treatment of mood, personality, and addictive disorders. During her time working with Talbott, she co-authored “A New Path – Personality Styles and Recovery from Addiction” and became a certified HIMS provider.  After relocating to Washington in 2013, she joined a large medical practice dedicated to women’s health and metabolic recovery and began her studies of obesity and metabolic disorders. This unique experience was an opportunity to fully integrate mental health counseling and supportive resources in a large primary care setting dedicated to recovery.

In 2016, Heather founded BreakThrough! a practice dedicated to supporting mental and metabolic recovery. Since then, the “Breakthrough!” team has focused on developing and facilitating approved, evidence-based programs. These programs are designed to educate and train health and wellness professionals how to help their clients overcome the mental health disorders that lead to disordered eating, and the development of obesity. She and her team are passionate about integrated care, training, and research. They continue to develop programs to help individuals and communities recover from lifestyle and psychological disorders with a new focus on children and adolescent populations. From a personal perspective, a devastating family legacy of losses due to obesity and type 2 diabetes, spurs Heather’s dedication to offering inclusive, cost-effective interventions that support professionals dedicated to lifestyle health recovery.

Dr. Hamilton is a member of the American Counseling Association, American Psychological Association, American College of Lifestyle Medicine, American Diabetes Association, Obesity Medicine Association, National Board of Certified Counselors, and the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors.
